Bobist Rituals
Rituals are an important part of Bobism and they can range from quite simple to more involved. In Bobism, there are rituals for everyone, and they are meant to be as accessible as possible. The only supply you truly need is your own heart and your passion.
Ritual Supplies and Altars
Though an altar is not a required part of a Bobist ritual, it is a beneficial thing to have. It can be almost anywhere and be filled with anything, the only requireMINT is that it brings joy. Bobist altars are often filled with peppermint candies, peppermint scented candles, and artwork depicting Bobist deities or saints. Shown on the left is an example of a more elaborate Bobist altar, but they can be as simple or as complex as the maker would like.
Since this religion is very focused on the love of peppermints, peppermint candies can be a great addition to rituals. You may place them around you while you perform your ritual, or eat them whilst performing it. Any peppermint candy will work. Soft mints, ribbon candy, candy canes, chocolate peppermint candies, etc. all harbour the spirit of Bobism.
Ritual Books + Making Your Own Rituals
As a religion, we very much encourage members to explore Bobism with curiosity and creativity, and that can involve making rituals for yourself. These are often highly personal and done by including some reminder or token of Bobism in your daily life. These can be quite simple to very complex, it just depends on your personal desire. For example, wearing a necklace that reminds you of the holy peppermints to help remind you to feel calm and refreshed could be considered a ritual, and so could an elabourate dance circle with many people around a fire, chanting Bobist songs. It is all up to the Bobist.
One thing that can help a lot with making personal rituals is to keep a ritual book. These can be made with any blank book, such as a sketchbook or notebook, and they are often decorated with peppermint-inspired items. The one in the example photo is hand-bound, but that's not a requirement. Getting a basic notebook or sketchbook is just as valid- the rituals are the important part! Use this book to keep instructions and notes on your personal rituals and/or Bobist rituals already on the site. That way you'll have one convenient place to go to when you want to do a ritual!
Mintosekai Ritual
"Mintosekai" means "mint world", and in Bobism, it is a state of mind in which the Bobist is at peace. Steps to reaching Mintosekai can be swapped out depending on what is available to you at the moment, but it is very effective.
- Have a drink such as peppermint tea, peppermint hot cocoa, or coffee with peppermint syrup mixed in. If you're not into those, mint water can also be relaxing.
- Light candles. Preferably peppermint-scented, but unscented or different scents work as well. You can also turn an unscented candle into a scented one by lighting it for about thirty minutes, mixing some essential oil in, and waiting for it to harden. Of course make sure to supervise your candles while they're lit, especially if a Bobist cat is nearby.
- Turn on music. If you are in your own home, you can use speakers, but if you're in public, make sure to use headphones to respect the comfort of those around you. You can listen to anything, of course, but to relax, we recommend lo-fi and acoustic ambient music, or our own Bobist music.
- Make something creative. This can be anything, it just has to be relaxing to you personally. Things such as painting, needle felting, and even baking are great ways to pass the time.
- Make something to eat. This ties into the last step, as it can be considered creative, but sometimes you just need to make your favorite cosy comfort food such as soup or mac and cheese. This is your excuse to do so, even though you don't need an excuse to do what you want. You do not even have to make a full meal, you can just make something simple and delicious like peppermint bark. If you don't have time to make something or just don't want to, you can go by a local store and pick up a treat for yourself such as a doughnut or cupcake.
- Read. Read anything you want. The Bobspel of Peppermint is a good place to start.
- Take a shower or bath. You can turn on ambient music, light candles, and stay in as long as you want. Afterwards, you may want to do some nice extra things, such as painting your nails or moisturising.
- Spend time with a cat. This can be your own cat, a friend's cat, a cat at a cat cafe, etc. Cats are sacred in Bobism, and they are sure to help you unwind. They may tell you the secret of the universe if you listen. The secret is "prrrrr".
- Spend time with your friends. This does not have to be physically, you can message them if you don't feel like going out and it's just as good. If you do see them physically, you may want to bring a bag of mints to eat together.
- Take a walk outside. Depending on the weather you might not be able to do this, but if you can, it's a good idea.
- Do a bit of cleaning. It is often very relaxing to tidy your space, and very rewarding as well! Any amount of cleaning is good.
- Sleep. Whether it is a short nap or a full night, Bobists value getting a good amount of sleep and relaxation.
Remember, everyone's version of Mintosekai is different. What is relaxing to one Bobist can be draining to the next. It is important to try different things to find your version of Mintosekai.
You will know you've reached Mintosekai once you feel energised yet calm. You may also feel the lingering presence of a deity, which you cannot see, but they are around to observe. Enjoy this serenity.
Other Bobist Rituals
The Mintosekai ritual is not our only ritual. We have others, as well, and they are all quite flexible in terms of how you perform them and what you use. You can also invent your own personal Bobist rituals.
Deity Summoning
As our deities are not visible in this universe, it can be difficult to summon them and sense their presence. However, you can still do it, and here are a few ideas on how. These can vary depending on how much space and supplies you have but really, anyone can summon a Bobist deity no matter their situation.
Start by setting up your altar, which can be anywhere. You will want to place things like peppermint candies, peppermint-scented candles, candy canes, or really anything peppermint related that you have. You can also place artwork you have made whether it's related to Bobism/peppermints or not, as artwork is sacred in Bobism.
Light your candles, if you have them, and eat a peppermint candy. Focus on the sensation inside your mouth as it dissolves and the flavour spreads throughout your soul. You may choose to simply close your eyes and stay silent, as if meditating, or you can hum/sing a Bobist hymn such as "Bob-Psalms" or "Mintamorphosis". You may feel a sensation of calm washing over you, as if you were warmly embraced by a being unknown. (Mintira and Bob are usually the ones doing the embracing, but if you feel the presence is there but somewhere behind you, it may be Mintaya or Nora. Don't worry, they are just as supportive.)
From there you can spend as much time as you may need, focusing on the love of peppermints. You may ask them a question in your mind or simply acknowledge their presence and rejoice in it. When you are finished with the ritual, blow out any candles and eat one more mint if you so desire before returning to your daily life. Remember that Bobist deities may offer some reassurance, but you are in control of your own life.
Imbuing items with the spirit of Bobism
This is somewhat like deity summoning, however the deities aren't present in this type of ritual. This type of ritual is meant to form a connection with some sort of physical item and the general spirit of Bobliness, such as a piece of artwork of a baked good. It works the best during the creation of an item, but it can also be done after the creation. The only thing that matters is you feel a strong connection to it.
For example, a good thing to start with is baked goods, especially those that involve peppermints. For inspiration, you might look at this list. Start by laying out your ingredients as well as lighting peppermint candles if you so desire to set the mood, and turn on a speaker to play Bobist hymns such as Bob-Psalms, Spearmint Sacrifice, Mintamorphosis, etc. You can also eat a peppermint (or multiple) while you do this. Feel yourself get lost inside the music as you begin the recipe. Once you are finished, whatever you have made will be imbued with the passionate spirit of Bobism.
This same process can be done with artwork and really anything you are making by hand. Some ideas may be crocheting, needle felting, candle making, painting, drawing, or really anything you may want to do. It also works especially well with ceramic artwork, such as the Bobist ice cream dish shown beside this section.
The Binding of Loose Ends
This is a more involved ritual, meant to help a Bobist move forward in their life by putting a clear end to a past era of themselves and untethering themselves to it. How exactly this is done can vary vastly, as everyone's life is different, but the general idea is constant.
- To begin, the Bobist must identify what part of their life they want to put a close on. This can be something in the physical universe or something in the mind, such as a belief you once held that you would like to leave behind.
- If the thing involves a person, place, etc. in the world, the Bobist shall go to it and resolve things as best they can. For example, if it is a person they wronged, they may go back and apologise, or a place they never want to return to, they may go there to officially bid farewell. The important thing here is that you mean it. Don't do a half-assed apology, do your absolute best to be genuine as that is the only way you can move on.
- After you do this, chant 'O, Bob, holy peppermints, bid farewell to this chapter in my life'. Do this as many times as you feel necessary.
- Aftwerwards, do something you enjoy. Perhaps cook your favourite meal, do something self-care related, make art, etc. This will serve as the first thing done in this new era of your life, so it's important to have it be a positive experience.
